Submersible Pump Overhaul and Diffuser Machining

Fenflow Limited 20 April 2025

Fenflow Limited currently has a Weir submersible pump in our Spalding workshop undergoing a full overhaul after severe cavitation damage was identified on the diffuser.

Cavitation can cause significant wear to pump components, reducing efficiency and leading to long term mechanical failure if not addressed correctly.

Reverse Engineered Diffuser Casting

Due to the extent of the damage, a new diffuser casting was manufactured and machined in house by our engineering team. The component was precision machined back to its original tolerances, ensuring correct hydraulic performance and fitment.

Our workshop machining capabilities allow us to reverse engineer and manufacture obsolete or heavily worn pump components, restoring equipment to original specification.

Complete Pump Overhaul and Seal Pressure Testing

Alongside the diffuser replacement, the submersible pump was fully overhauled by Fenflow Limited. Before dispatch, we carried out pressure testing of the mechanical seal to ensure integrity and reliability prior to reinstallation for a local Internal Drainage Board.

This thorough process ensures the pump is returned to service operating efficiently and reliably within the drainage system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes cavitation damage in pumps?

Cavitation occurs when vapour bubbles form and collapse within the pump due to low pressure conditions. Over time this can cause severe erosion and damage to impellers, diffusers, and pump casings.

Can pump diffusers be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes. In many cases, diffuser assemblies can be machined, refurbished, lined, or reverse engineered to restore performance and extend equipment lifespan.

What is included in a submersible pump overhaul?

A typical overhaul includes strip down inspection, bearing and seal replacement, impeller inspection, machining repairs, alignment checks, reassembly, and performance testing.

Does Fenflow Limited support obsolete pumps?

Yes. Fenflow Limited specialises in reverse engineering and bespoke component manufacture for obsolete and difficult-to-source industrial equipment.

What areas does Fenflow Limited cover?

Fenflow Limited supports customers across Lincolnshire, Yorkshire & Humber, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and the wider East Midlands region
